How to read a rate decision calendar
Meetings run over two days and the decision comes at the end of the second, so the date to diary is the decision day rather than the opening day.
At four meetings a year the Fed also publishes its economic projections, the dot plot. Markets weight those meetings more heavily, because they show not only today's rate but the path the committee expects from here.
What usually moves a price is not the decision itself but the gap between it and what was expected. If a hold is already priced, holding is not a surprise; the surprise is a statement or a press conference that points somewhere other than the market assumed.
