Amazon cargo jet overran Miami runway, NTSB says

The Amazon cargo jet that crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday came to rest about 1,300 feet beyond the runway after overrunning the landing surface, federal investigators said Monday. The aircraft struck vehicles both inside and outside the airport perimeter, and the accident left at least five people dead.

Impact and damage

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, described the scene as complete destruction. Investigators said the plane was being operated for Amazon by 21 Air LLC and had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, on its third flight of the day. The NTSB said the aircraft was not immediately being examined for probable cause while crews remained on site.

The plane first hit a 2021 Ford Econoline van owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., a cleaning contractor for airlines, with seven people inside. It then broke through a perimeter fence and hit a Toyota Corolla Cross outside the airport boundary. The fatalities were all from those two vehicles, the NTSB said.

What investigators have recovered

The aircraft also crossed a second fence that bordered an area where Tesla robotaxis were parked before stopping. Investigators have recovered the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, which are due to be taken to NTSB headquarters for analysis. Officials said they expect to release more information on Tuesday.

The NTSB said its team will remain at the crash site for at least a week. Homendy said investigators will examine the relationship between Amazon and 21 Air as part of the inquiry, but she did not discuss the cause of the crash. The case adds scrutiny to a cargo operation that was carrying Amazon freight in a high-profile airport accident.
