OpenAI to cut Cursor model access after SpaceX deal

OpenAI plans to end model access through Cursor in November, moving to sever a relationship that had made its systems available to the coding startup’s users. The company said the change follows SpaceX’s acquisition of Cursor earlier this month and reflects concern about how its technology would be used under the new owner.

OpenAI cites contract and trust concerns

OpenAI said it no longer has confidence that SpaceX will use its technology within the terms of service, pointing to prior disputes with Elon Musk’s companies over contractual obligations. The company set Nov. 12 as the proposed shutoff date for OpenAI models inside Cursor and said it will not provide future models to the startup as the agreement is wound down.

Cursor CEO Michael Truell said on X that OpenAI models account for about 5% of Cursor’s user traffic and that the companies are discussing a resolution. He also said Cursor had been an early OpenAI customer and had treated the platform as neutral infrastructure for its business.

Another turn in the Musk-OpenAI fight

The decision adds to a long and contentious split between Musk and OpenAI’s leadership. Musk responded on X by dismissing the companies’ leaders and repeating his accusation that they had taken what he views as open-source, nonprofit work and turned it into something else.

SpaceX completed its $60 billion purchase of Cursor on Aug. 14, according to financial filings. The acquisition places the coding startup inside Musk’s wider portfolio, which already includes X and xAI after earlier transactions this year. OpenAI’s move shows how ownership changes can quickly reshape access to core AI infrastructure for developer products.
