EUR/USD Tests Key Resistance as Traders Reassess ECB Path

The euro pushed toward a multi-month high against the dollar as markets recalibrated expectations for European Central Bank policy.

The euro climbed to its strongest level against the dollar in several months this week, approaching a resistance zone that has capped rallies twice already this year, as traders adjusted their expectations for the pace of European Central Bank policy easing.

EUR/USD traded near 1.092 in European hours, extending a gradual uptrend that began after last month's inflation data came in softer than expected across several eurozone member states.

Desk commentary pointed to a narrowing rate differential between the Fed and the ECB as the primary driver, with markets now pricing a slower pace of cuts from Frankfurt than had been assumed just a month ago.

Technical picture in focus

Chartists flagged the 1.095 region as a critical resistance band, noting that a decisive close above that level on strong volume could open the door to a retest of the year's highs. Conversely, failure to clear the zone in the coming sessions could see the pair drift back toward the 1.08 support cluster.

Options markets showed a modest skew toward calls on the euro over the coming month, indicating that positioning has tilted cautiously bullish even as realized volatility in the pair remains historically subdued.

Sterling and the Swiss franc both traded in tighter ranges against the dollar over the same period, with desks noting comparatively thin catalysts on the calendar for either currency this week.

Looking ahead, traders said upcoming eurozone industrial production figures and a scheduled speech from a senior ECB official could serve as the next meaningful catalysts for direction.

For now, the broader dollar remains the dominant variable, with its trajectory tied closely to how markets continue to price the Fed's next move.
