What is Altcoin?

Altcoin is a term for any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin, encompassing thousands of alternative digital assets like Ethereum, Solana, and Cardano.

Short for 'alternative coin,' altcoin refers to the vast universe of cryptocurrencies launched after Bitcoin's success. While Bitcoin was created as a decentralized digital currency, altcoins often seek to improve upon or offer different functionalities than Bitcoin, such as faster transaction speeds, different consensus mechanisms, or programmable smart contract platforms.

The altcoin market is highly diverse and volatile. It includes major projects with large market capitalizations, like Ethereum (which enables decentralized applications), as well as thousands of smaller, more speculative tokens. Investors in altcoins are exposed to higher risk and potential reward compared to the more established Bitcoin, and the sector is subject to rapid technological change and regulatory scrutiny.

ExampleEthereum (ETH), often considered the leading altcoin, is not just a currency but a platform for developers to build decentralized applications and smart contracts, differentiating it significantly from Bitcoin's primary use as digital gold.
