GlossaryCrypto

What is Cryptocurrency?

A digital asset secured by cryptography, typically operating on a decentralized blockchain network.

Cryptocurrency is a type of digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography for security and operates on a decentralized network based on blockchain technology. Unlike traditional currencies issued by central banks, most cryptocurrencies are not controlled by any single authority, relying instead on a distributed ledger maintained by a network of computers. Bitcoin and Ethereum are the most well-known examples.

Transactions are verified by network participants through a process like mining or staking, and recorded on a public ledger. Cryptocurrencies can be used for peer-to-peer payments, smart contracts, and as a speculative investment. Their prices are known for being highly volatile, meaning they can experience significant price swings in short periods.

ExampleTo send Bitcoin to a friend, you use a digital wallet and the blockchain network directly, bypassing any bank or payment processor.
