Coinbase shares fall on wider-than-expected quarterly loss

Coinbase reported a deeper second-quarter loss and missed Wall Street estimates again, even as subscription revenue grew to a larger share of the business.

Coinbase shares slipped in after-hours trading on Thursday after the crypto exchange posted second-quarter results that came in below expectations. The report showed that the company is still contending with a weak digital-asset backdrop, even as it works to build more stable revenue streams beyond trading.

The exchange reported a loss of $359.5 million, or $1.36 a share, for the three months ended June 30. That compared with a profit of $1.43 billion, or $5.14 a share, in the same period a year earlier. It was Coinbase’s third consecutive quarter of missing Wall Street’s forecasts for both revenue and earnings.

Crypto market pressure persists

The results landed in a period when bitcoin traded in a relatively narrow range, but the broader setting remained difficult for crypto investors. ETF flows into bitcoin turned negative during the quarter, while higher interest rates and broader market swings continued to curb appetite for risk. Coinbase’s reported net income can also move sharply because it marks its crypto holdings to market at quarter-end prices.

Revenue from subscriptions became a bigger part of the business in the quarter, providing some support for Coinbase’s diversification efforts. That segment brought in $555 million, compared with $599 million in transaction revenue. Even so, both lines fell short of analysts’ expectations and were lower than a year earlier.

Diversification has not yet offset trading weakness

The company has been trying to reduce its dependence on transaction activity, which remains closely tied to market conditions and trading volumes. The latest figures suggest that progress is underway, but not fast enough to offset the impact of a softer crypto environment. Subscription revenue helped balance the mix, yet the core trading business remained under pressure.

Coinbase has spent much of the past year trying to persuade investors that it can build a broader platform around crypto rather than relying mainly on exchange fees. Thursday’s update showed that effort is still in progress. For now, the company’s results remain heavily exposed to shifts in digital-asset prices and investor sentiment.

The shares’ decline after the release reflected that tension between longer-term strategy and near-term performance. While the business mix is changing, the quarter reinforced that Coinbase has not yet found a durable way to escape the volatility that has defined the crypto market. Investors are still waiting for evidence that new revenue sources can consistently cushion those swings.
