Corporate bond spreads, the extra yield investors demand to hold company debt over comparable government securities, remain near their tightest levels in more than two years, a signal that credit markets are showing little concern about the growth worries occasionally surfacing in equity commentary.

Investment-grade spreads have held in a narrow range for several months, according to figures tracked by the desk, even as economic data has sent occasionally mixed signals about the pace of the broader expansion.

Why credit markets are seen as an early warning system

Analysts often watch credit spreads as a leading indicator, since bond investors tend to demand higher compensation well before a downturn becomes visible in equity prices or broader economic data, given their position higher in a company's capital structure.

High-yield spreads, which cover lower-rated and more economically sensitive borrowers, have also stayed compressed, a pattern strategists said would typically widen meaningfully if investors were pricing in a material rise in default risk.

The desk's view is that while equity volatility can spike on individual data surprises, the steadiness of credit spreads offers a useful counterweight, suggesting fixed-income investors currently see limited near-term risk of a sharp economic deterioration.
