Ethereum outperformed bitcoin over the past week, posting its strongest five-day gain in several months as anticipation built ahead of a planned network upgrade expected to improve transaction throughput and reduce fees.
The token traded near $3,940, up roughly 9% over the period, narrowing the performance gap with bitcoin that had widened earlier in the year as institutional flows concentrated more heavily in the larger cryptocurrency.
Developer activity trackers showed a pickup in code commits and testnet deployments tied to the upcoming upgrade, which desk analysts said has historically been a leading indicator of price strength in the weeks preceding a major protocol change.
Staking and derivatives data point to conviction
The share of circulating ether locked in staking contracts rose modestly over the week, suggesting holders are opting to lock up supply rather than sell into the rally — a dynamic that can amplify upside moves when demand picks up.
Futures open interest climbed alongside the price, though funding rates remained in a relatively balanced range, easing concerns about an overheated, leverage-driven advance.
Layer-2 network activity, which settles transactions on top of the base Ethereum chain, also showed a notable uptick in daily volumes, reinforcing the narrative of improving underlying network usage.
Some altcoins tied closely to the Ethereum ecosystem posted even sharper percentage gains, with several decentralized finance tokens rallying double digits over the same stretch.
Analysts cautioned that upgrade-related rallies have sometimes faded quickly once the event itself passes, and recommended traders watch for confirmation of sustained network usage growth rather than relying on anticipation alone.
