The Sandbox pledges 1:1 repayment after bridge exploit
The Sandbox said it will make eligible SAND holders whole after a bridge exploit drained about $700,000, with compensation paid from treasury funds and claims due to open within two weeks.
Blockchain gaming platform The Sandbox has said it will reimburse eligible SAND holders after a bridge exploit on Aug. 21 drained tokens worth about $700,000 from an Ethereum vault. The company said the affected balances were tied to bridged SAND on Base and BNB Smart Chain.
Compensation plan
Under the recovery plan, holders who legitimately owned bridged SAND on Base or BNB Chain before the attack will receive the same amount of Ethereum-based SAND. The payout will come from The Sandbox treasury, and the company said no new tokens will be created for the process. Claims are expected to open within two weeks and stay available for another two-week window.
The company’s post-mortem said two centralized exchanges control more than 72% of the eligible balances and will pass compensation on to their customers directly. That leaves a smaller share of claims to be handled by individual users outside those exchanges.
What failed in the bridge
The Sandbox said the incident stemmed from a configuration problem in its Base and BNB Chain contracts. The flaw allowed the attacker to become the only verifier of incoming bridge messages, which then let them mint tokens improperly.
Bridge systems are designed to move assets between blockchains while keeping supply in line across networks. When that verification layer breaks, attackers can create tokens or unlock value without the usual authorization checks, which is why bridge failures often lead to fast losses.
The company’s response is aimed at restoring balances rather than expanding supply. By using treasury funds and keeping the compensation in Ethereum-based SAND, The Sandbox is trying to make eligible users whole without adding fresh issuance to the token base.
For the market, the incident is another reminder that cross-chain infrastructure remains a weak point in crypto even when the underlying project is established. It also shows how exchange custody can shape the speed and mechanics of restitution after an exploit.
