South Korean financial group Mirae Asset is outlining a digital asset business it says could reach 150 trillion won, or about $109 billion, as it expands around Digital X, the exchange formerly known as Korbit. The plan would bring together trading, stablecoins, tokenized assets and other digital finance products under one umbrella.
From exchange control to broader platform
The move follows Mirae Asset Consulting’s purchase of a 97.15% stake in Korbit in July, a deal valued at 141.4 billion won in total. After the acquisition, the exchange was rebranded Digital X, giving the firm direct control of a domestic crypto platform for the first time through an affiliate of a South Korean financial group.
Digital X is expected to serve as the center of the group’s wider push into crypto and blockchain-based financial services. The reported strategy includes work on stablecoins and real-world assets, alongside security token offerings that would use blockchain rails for traditional assets.
Tokenization expands the target market
The reported tokenization plans go beyond financial instruments and include physical assets such as gold, silver and electricity. That points to a business model that is not limited to spot trading, but one that could connect markets for commodities and infrastructure-linked products with digital settlement and issuance.
Mirae Asset’s ambitions also come at a time when large financial firms are exploring how to package existing assets into blockchain formats that can be issued, traded or settled more efficiently. In this case, the scale of the proposed business suggests the group sees digital assets as a core growth area rather than a side bet.
The original Korbit exchange adds historical weight to the deal. Founded in 2013, it was South Korea’s first cryptocurrency exchange, although its market share has been small in recent years.
For South Korea’s crypto market, the acquisition matters because it places a major traditional financial group in direct control of an exchange platform. That could strengthen competition in the domestic market while also giving Mirae Asset a base from which to build products tied to stablecoins and tokenized assets.
