Michigan presses court bid to block Kalshi

Michigan’s attorney general said a state court approved a preliminary injunction against Kalshi, escalating a dispute over prediction markets as a Supreme Court fight approaches.

Michigan officials are continuing their push to keep Kalshi out of the state, after a court order tightened restrictions on the prediction markets platform. Attorney General Dana Nessel said the Circuit Court for the 30th Judicial Circuit in Ingham County approved a preliminary injunction barring the company from offering event contracts to Michigan residents.

Court order raises daily penalty risk

The order gives Michigan a stronger legal basis to enforce its position while the wider clash over event contracts moves closer to the Supreme Court. State officials have cast Kalshi’s products as a form of sports betting presented as an investment product, a characterization that sits at the center of the dispute. The company faces the possibility of fines of up to $500,000 a day if it violates the injunction.

Kalshi has already argued that it was left in an impossible position after federal authorities told it to disregard a Michigan restraining order issued in June. That earlier directive underscored the tension between state-level enforcement and federal intervention, and the latest ruling adds another layer to the conflict.

A broader fight over prediction markets

The Michigan action is part of a wider legal test for prediction markets and how they are regulated. Kalshi has become one of the most closely watched platforms in the sector because its contracts blur the line between market speculation and gambling-style products, drawing scrutiny from state regulators.

Nessel said the company had tried to present itself as a legitimate gaming operator in Michigan, while the state described its model as predatory and unlicensed. The injunction keeps that dispute alive and leaves the company facing a tougher enforcement environment in one of the states taking the most aggressive stance against it.

For market participants, the case matters because it could help shape where event contracts can be offered and under what rules. A ruling that strengthens state authority would increase legal pressure on firms operating in the space, while any outcome favoring Kalshi could broaden the room for prediction-market products to reach customers.
