What is the MACD Indicator?

The MACD indicator, which is one of the effective momentum indicators, was developed by Gerald Appel in the 1970s. The basis of this indicator is the world's most frequently used trend tracking indicator Moving Average '(MA). The explanation of the MACD indicator is "Moving Average Convergence Divergence". The MACD indicator is basically a data obtained by moving averages converging and diverging. Although the MACD indicator has increased in popularity with Crypto coins in recent years, it has also produced important signals for traditional markets.

How to Calculate MACD?

Parameter 26-12-9 is used. MACD Indicator, after removing 26 days of exponential practice from 12 days of exponential practice after that with this data obtained, it produces a signal by cutting the exponential average for 9 days.   This indicator has 2 lines. One of them is the MACD line and the other is the signal line. The basic point of signal generation is that the signal line cuts the MACD Line up or down. If the moving average formed using the periods 26 and 12 is greater than the 9-day exponential average ; it is considered as BUY. If the moving average formed by using the 26 and 12 periods is less than the 9-day exponential average, it is considered as a SALE signal. The logic is based on the short daily moving average breaking the long term moving average. EMA is used in the MACD indicator, i.e. moving exponential average. The average of the last days of the EMA is more important, but unlike the averages focused (WMA) on other last days, all movements and past of the relevant stock are taken into account.

Frequently asked questions

What is the MACD indicator and what does it measure?

The MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) indicator is a momentum indicator developed by Gerald Appel. It measures the relationship between two exponential moving averages (EMAs) of an asset's price to identify potential changes in trend strength, direction, and momentum.

How is the MACD indicator calculated?

The MACD is calculated by subtracting the 26-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) from the 12-period EMA. A 9-period EMA of this resulting MACD line is then plotted alongside it, which serves as the 'signal line' to generate trading signals.

How do you interpret a MACD crossover signal?

A common buy signal is generated when the MACD line crosses above the signal line, suggesting increasing upward momentum. Conversely, a sell signal is indicated when the MACD line crosses below the signal line, suggesting increasing downward momentum.

Is the MACD indicator only used for cryptocurrency trading?

No, while its popularity has grown in cryptocurrency markets, the MACD indicator was developed for traditional financial markets and remains a widely used tool for analyzing stocks, forex, and other traditional assets.
