Zcash surges to highest level since 2016

Zcash extended a sharp rally on Monday, climbing to its highest price since 2016 and pushing its market capitalization above $20 billion. The privacy-focused token, ZEC, has been among the stronger performers in crypto over the past week as trading in a new exchange-traded fund helped fuel interest.

ETF launch adds momentum

ZEC briefly touched $1,249.28 before easing back to around $1,195, based on CoinGecko data. Over the past seven days, the token rose about 45%, and it gained 138% over the last 30 days. The move leaves Zcash well above recent levels, though still below its launch-era peak.

Grayscale converted its Zcash Trust into an ETF that started trading on Aug. 25, and the shift has coincided with the latest leg of the advance. The fund structure gives market participants a new way to gain exposure to the asset without holding the token directly. That change has added visibility to a cryptocurrency built around privacy features.

Privacy narrative returns to focus

Zcash is designed to let users choose between transparent transfers and shielded ones. Its shielded transactions use zero-knowledge proofs, a cryptographic method that confirms a payment took place without revealing the sender, recipient or amount. That design has kept ZEC in a narrow group of digital assets focused on transactional privacy rather than broad smart-contract use.

In Grayscale research published on Aug. 31, head of research Zach Pandl said privacy could become a more important feature for users who value confidentiality. He also said artificial intelligence may increase demand for financial privacy by making it easier to analyze personal data. That argument has become part of the broader narrative supporting interest in Zcash.

The latest rally also comes against a distant historical benchmark. CoinGecko shows Zcash’s all-time high at $3,191.93, reached on Oct. 28, 2016, when fewer tokens were in circulation. Even after the recent surge, the coin remains below that level, but its market value has already returned to a scale rarely seen since the early years of the project.

For the wider market, the move highlights how ETF access can quickly change the trading profile of a digital asset. It also shows that privacy-themed cryptocurrencies can still draw attention when liquidity, product access and a strong narrative align. Whether the gains hold will depend on how much of the recent demand proves to be durable rather than event-driven.
